For the second time now, when I turned on the EvoPrimer it is showing a screen

Loader Utility
version: 1.0.2
...

Waiting for command ...

And it does not respond to any joystick/button commands anymore. The only way I found is to turn off the power to the target board to reset it.

How does it get into this mode, and is there a way to get out of it without switching the little switch for the target board power?

This message indicates that the base does not recognize the target board, and starts in mode "update". Verify that the board is correctly plugged into the base.
Which is the target board type you have ?

I have the STM32F103VE target board. This is the second time that happened. Turning the power switch off and back on again resolves this, but then you have to go through the calibration again and the RTC seems to lose it's time.

My EVOPrimer showed a similar message when first booted: "Waiting for connexion", and was stuck at the "loader" screen.

There was a problem with the ground connection between the base pcb and the target pcb, losing around 1 volt. A wire soldered between the grounds of the two boards (e.g. between both usb connector shields) solved the issues, and the EVOPrimer appears to be working without problems thus far.

Is it possible to upgrade Loader utility (or RLink) from version 1.0.1 to 1.0.2 ?

Purchased 2 EvoPrimers from someone and one of the Evos have 1.0.2 firmware, but the other one has 1.0.1. I thought there are some improvements or bugfix in the newer 1.0.2 firmware and I just wanted to upgrade to avoid further problems may occur. Nothing found to upgrade firmware, this is why I asked here...

There is no critical improvement. This concerns only the utilisation of the EvoPrimer as RLink probe debugger with a OP4-RLink adapter, for more user comfort.
For normal EvoPrimer use, you do not need update.
However, the firmware update with Ride will be available at the end of the year.
