Another Dead Primer2?

Hello.  I just purchased a Primer2.  The first thing I did was connect the battery jumper and plug in the USB cable to charge the unit.  The red LED came on as it should, and eventually the green LED came on as well (took a couple of hours).  I then removed the USB cable and pressed the joystick button.  Nothing happened.  I then plugged the USB cable back in and pressed the joystick button and the unit turned on and functioned properly (note that the red LED came on, and the green LED was off).  As soon as I removed the USB cable the unit shut off.  I am now charging the unit with a voltmeter across the battery terminals.  At first the voltage was 4.??V, but after a minute or two the voltage dropped to ~0.35V, and now after about 10 minutes the voltage is 0.24V.  Is this normal behavior?  Does this charger do a drain cycle before actually charging the battery?

Cheers, Keith

Re: Another Dead Primer2?

Update: after about an hour of charging the voltage on the battery was 0.03V and the green LED was on.  When I pulled the USB cable the voltage dropped to 0.02V, 0.01V, and then 0.0V.  So there is essentially no charge in the battery.  Something seems broken here, either the charger or the battery.  What is the criteria for the green LED coming on?  Certainly it is not the battery voltage...

Re: Another Dead Primer2?

Hi,

Normally the green Led indicates the end of the battery charging.
But, if the red Led is also on, it indicates the absence or a fault of the battery.
Was your red Led on or off, when the green went on ?

Hello Yves.  Thanks for your reply.  The red LED stayed on.  I have never seen it off...

Re: Another Dead Primer2?

Hi Keith,

It seems that your battery is dead.
We got some problems with Primer stored during a long time.
We will contact you by email to see how to proceed.

Re: Another Dead Primer2?

On closer examination there is electrolyte leaking from the positive terminal of the battery.  I do not know if it was there when I received the unit, or only after I attempted to charge the battery.  It would appear the battery is defective.  I purchased the unit from Mouser Electronics (USA).  I do not know how long it was stored there.  Okay, I will wait for your email...

Thanks, Keith

Re: Another Dead Primer2?

Hallo.

Since it seems that the Primer2's batteries tend to give up sometimes it might be good to have a supplier for replacement. I have found one in Germany.

www.akkustadt.de

CGR14430 - Lithium-Akku (mit Lötfahne)
Technische Daten
Spannung: 3.7V
Kapazität: 650 mAh
Type: Li-Ion
Durchmesser: 14mm
Höhe: 43mm

Ersetzt Panasonic CGR 14430

I have not tried it yet but it seems to fit. What do you think?
